Manga Imitations
Katekyo Hitman Reborn
This was my first ever attempt at drawing manga. This image is based on a poster shot from the manga 'Katekyo Hitman Reborn'. None of the image was traced and all lines were initially drawn in pencil and then covered with black marker pen. The drawing was done on a single sheet of A3 card and took 1 day to complete. It was especially difficult to draw the glove as it required a lot of precision to accurately replicate. The details in the eyes and hair were never replicated as they would require multiple shades and I only had a single black marker at the time. I used the picture as a cover for one of my art books, hence the 'art' title.
One Piece
A few months after my first ever manga piece, I decided to do a more detailed manga imitation. This one is based on a double spread page from the manga 'One Piece'. As with my previous work, the drawing was not traced, but drawn in pencil and covered with marker pen. I was able to implement more detail in this image as I had multiple marker shades available to work with. The drawing was done on a single piece of A2 card and took 2 days to complete. The speech was never put in the bubbles as I could not decide whether I wanted to put in the English or Japanese text.
Stencils
Horse
The horse stencil was my first ever stencil, which I did as a birthday card cover for my mother when I was 11. The stencil was fully original, but very basic. It was made by simply drawing an outline for the stencil on the card and cutting out the outline with a Stanley knife. The dark backing was another piece of card slotted behind the cut out outline.
Geodesic
I did this stencil under instruction from an online art blog which sets daily challenges. The challenge was to use an object you find important to create a template for a stencil. It recommended I used paint for this stencil. I decided to use the faulty model for my original airport model as my template inspiration. I copied out the rough shape of the model by freehand drawing. I then went over my shape with a marker and cut out the shape. Unfortunately, I did not have any spray paint on me at the time so I ended up using a black water based paint and a roller to create the stencil. (completed July 2012)
My Neighbour Totoro
This stencil was for my sisters' birthday card (completed in April 2011). She is a big fan of Japanese animation, so I decided to stencil out one of her favourite scenes from 'my neighbour totoro'. This was very hard for me, as I had never done a stencil of this detail before. For this stencil, I printed off a photo of the desired scene and cut out the outlines of every character using a scalpel. I then put the cut out scene over a piece of card and outlined the scene onto the paper with a pencil. Once the outline was drawn, I then went over and filled the outline with black marker.
Clint Eastwood
This stencil was also completed for a relatives birthday. In this instance it was my dad's. This card was completed in August 2012, so I had a little more experience and a greater understanding on how to stencil. I decided to go for a Clint Eastwood theme as my dad was in a spaghetti western phase. To do the stencil, I printed off the original image of Clint Eastwood and went over areas of dark shading with a marker. I then used a scalpel to cut out the marked areas. I then got a piece of card and placed the cut out picture on top. I then carefully copied out all of the cut out zones onto the card with a pencil and finally wen over my pencil outlines with a black marker.
Master Chief
This stencil was done for my brothers' birthday on September 2012 and is my most recent stencil to date. The process used to make this stencil is very similar to the Clint Eastwood method. To make the stencil more interesting, I decided to use different shades and incorporate grey tones into the stencil.
